Wired to notice
Some minds take in more of the world than others. That difference carries a cost, and it carries a yield — and our culture is far better at counting the first than the second.
Neurodivergence is not one condition
"Neurodivergent" covers a wide range: autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, Tourette's, and more. These are not variations of one another, and they don't produce a single profile. An autistic teenager who barely speaks and an adult with ADHD who can't stop talking are not two versions of the same story.
But they share a shape. Each involves a nervous system that handles information differently from the majority — and each tends to produce a person who finds ordinary things unexpectedly hard, and certain hard things unexpectedly natural.
That second half is the part that gets lost.
What "sees more" actually means
The idea that neurodivergent people perceive the world more intensely is usually said warmly and vaguely. It is worth saying precisely, because in several areas the evidence is specific.
Detail-level perception. The enhanced perceptual functioning model, developed by Laurent Mottron and colleagues at the University of Montreal, proposes that autistic perception involves genuinely superior low-level visual and auditory discrimination — that detail arrives with more signal, rather than merely being attended to more carefully. The model sets out eight principles of autistic perception, including locally oriented processing, enhanced low-level discrimination, and unusual independence of perception from higher-order cognition (Mottron et al., Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 2006). Neuroimaging from the same research group found autistic participants allocating more brain resource to visual detection and identification regions, across a range of tasks — the first physiological support for enhanced perceptual processing as a core feature of autistic neural organisation rather than a task-specific quirk.
Pitch. Absolute pitch is estimated to occur in 1 to 5 people per 10,000 in the general population. Among autistic people, estimates run between 5% and 11%. In one UK study of 72 autistic teenagers, roughly 20% showed superior pitch discrimination (reviewed in Hisaizumi & Tantam, Autism & Developmental Language Impairments, 2024; see also the Kennedy Krieger Institute's summary of the research). The most striking detail: enhanced pitch perception is found most often in autistic people with a history of language delay. Where speech didn't develop, the ear frequently did.
Divergent thinking. In studies of the general population, higher ADHD symptom levels are associated with stronger performance on divergent thinking measures — fluency, flexibility and originality — while convergent thinking shows no such effect (Frontiers in Psychiatry, 2022). The relationship appears to be non-linear rather than "more symptoms, more creativity", and results in diagnosed children are mixed. But the core observation holds: the same restlessness that makes a spreadsheet unbearable makes a blank canvas inviting.
Sensory intensity. Atypical sensory reactivity — hyper-reactivity, hypo-reactivity, or sensory seeking — is reported in the large majority of autistic people, with prevalence estimates commonly in the 70–90% range, and it has been part of the formal diagnostic criteria since DSM-5. It is not a fringe feature. For many people it is the daily texture of being alive.
And where the evidence is thin, we'll say so. The popular claim that dyslexia confers visual-spatial talent is not well supported. Results range from deficit to advantage depending on which task is used, and reviews find no consistent edge (BPS Research Digest; Gilger et al., Trends in Neuroscience and Education). What the literature does show is an asymmetry: people with exceptional visual-spatial gifts have unusually high rates of reading difficulty, but the reverse does not reliably hold. That's a real finding, and a more interesting one than the myth.

Feeling more, too
Sensory intensity is the other half of the story. Sounds that others filter out don't get filtered. Textures register at full volume. The emotional weather of a room arrives uninvited and unedited.
Lived that way, a supermarket is exhausting. But that same unfiltered channel is what a great deal of art is reaching for. Painters spend careers training themselves to see a shadow as it actually is rather than as they expect it to be. Some people never acquired the expectation in the first place.
This is part of why the work lands. Not because neurodivergent artists are trying harder to be authentic — because the layer of convention that normally sits between perception and the page is thinner.
The cost is real, and pretending otherwise helps nobody
A page like this can slide into telling people that their hardest struggles are secretly a gift. They aren't. Being unable to make yourself understood is not a creative advantage. A meltdown is not inspiration. A seizure is not a metaphor.
Two things are true at once: the difficulties are genuinely difficult, and the same wiring can produce genuinely exceptional work. Holding both is the honest position. Collapsing into either one — pure tragedy or pure gift — gets the person wrong.
One further caution. Not every neurodivergent person has an extraordinary talent, any more than every neurotypical person does. Nobody's worth is conditional on producing something remarkable. We write about talent here because talent is what galleries and markets are built to reward — not because it is the price of being taken seriously.
Why so much of it stays unseen
Here is the part Teodor exists to fix.
The work is often good. The work is almost never the problem. The problem is the twenty ordinary tasks standing between a finished piece and a buyer: pricing it, photographing it, listing it, answering an enquiry, scoping a commission, packing it safely, printing a label, issuing an invoice, chasing a payment, replying within two days so the buyer doesn't drift.
Every one of those tasks quietly assumes a particular kind of person — one who can hold a chain of admin in working memory, tolerate open-ended contact with strangers, and switch context on demand without paying for it. That is precisely the profile many neurodivergent artists don't have. A minor can't do any of it at all.
So the work stays in the sketchbook. Not rejected by the market. Never presented to it.

What actually helps
- Separate the making from the selling. A guardian, parent, agent or trusted friend handling pricing, shipping and buyer conversations is not a crutch. It is creative infrastructure — the same thing a gallerist is for everyone else. Teodor is built around exactly this split.
- Design the space for the way this person works. Materials pre-cut and pre-mixed for someone who needs a low barrier to starting. A predictable routine and a workspace that stays put for someone who needs the environment to hold still. Noise-cancelling headphones as standard equipment, not as an accommodation.
- Let the work be the communication. For artists who speak little or not at all, a finished piece is often a complete sentence — about what they love, what they've been turning over, what they want you to see. Treat it as one. Ask about it. Don't require the answer in words.
- Batch the admin, or remove it. One block a week beats a little every day. Better still, route it to someone for whom it isn't expensive.
- Protect the unfinished pile. Sketchbooks, offcuts, abandoned experiments — that's the compost. Don't tidy it away.
- Get a second opinion on "done". Perfectionism plus time-blindness will stall a good piece indefinitely. A trusted person saying "that's finished" is often the fastest unblock available.
